Hearing God

Before you start

Here are some things to know to keep you on the right track.

The nature of God's voice - how to test what you hear

1. God's words will never violate but easily aligns with Scripture.

2. They will affirm the names and roles of the Holy Spirit – Helper, Encourager,

Comforter, Teacher, Guide, Life-giver, Strengthener, Empowerer, Liberator,

Revealer of truth, Gift-giver.

3. They will reflect the character of the Spirit - loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind,

good, gentle…(Gal.5).

4. The nature of God’s thoughts will be spontaneous and ultimately positive,

usually in the first person.

5. If what you are hearing is negative, condemning, or does not fit with the principles above, it is not from God.  God may convict you, but He will be specific and do it in a loving manner.

6. When received, His words bring healing, freedom and life-transformation with strength to walk them out and joy in doing so.

Listening is hard. And messy. And imperfect

Our thoughts intrude.  The world intrudes.  Satan tries to distract.  Capture everything you hear, and then judge it.  I find if I write our what I am hearing, and read it the next day, the things from God really stand out to me.

Guided Prayer

These guides are meant to help you hear from God.  Find a quiet place free from distraction, read the scripture that is listed, ask God to speak to you, then write down/journal the thoughts that come to mind. Go back through what you wrote and test it against scripture and the character of God - underline or circle anything that jumps out at you.  Cross out anything that does not line up with scripture and God's character.  At the end, thank God for speaking to you!
